Rock Garden

What do you do when faced with a rock outcrop and lots of brambles in your garden? Robin Magowan was stymied by the stones beside the studio on his Connecticut property until he finally decided that: if you can't beat ‘em, join ‘em. His property now bristles with screes and crevice gardens for a variety of rock garden plants.

Robin has assembled a number of rocky habitats, each nurturing different alpine plants. Some have vertical stones to facilitate drainage for plants that like well-drained soil, while others have horizontal stones for alpines that need slightly more moisture.

Many of the plants and seeds used in the rock garden come from the North American Rock Garden Society. Highlights include:

Astragalus
Androsace spp.
Erigeron spp.
Aubrieta olympica
Aurinia spp.
Eriogonum jamesii
Campanula chamissonis
Silene acaulis
Penstemon eatonii
Thymus spp.
Sisyrinchium spp.
